What should I wear to salsa classes?Pretty much anything goes for salsa. Most importantly, wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely. Casual attire like a t-shirt and jeans or workout clothes is fine, or you might want to smarten up and glam up. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident, comfortable and ready to dance!

What kind of footwear is best?As a beginner it does not matter too much but for salsa dancing, it's generally easier to wear shoes with a smooth-ish sole to allow for easy turns and more comfort for your knees and ankles. Bring your most comfortable shoes, try to avoid rubber-soled shoes or trainers as they may grip the floor too much. Ladies often wear heels (not too high), but flats work really well too.
-
Do I need to bring a partner? No partner is necessary! Most people come to salsa classes. We usually rotate partners during the class so you'll get the chance to dance with different people and meet new friends. If you come with your partner and prefer not to change partners that is fine too although it is often much easier and quicker to learn by sometimes changing partners during the class. We will support whatever your preference is.
-
What style of salsa do you teach? We teach Cuban salsa in the classes. However we have experienced salsa dancers of all different styles that come to the social dancing after the classes so the music we play after the classes is a mixture of some of the best salsa music from all over South and North America.

I'm a beginner, have never danced salsa before and I might have 2 left feet. Is that okay?😊👍Absolutely! 👍😊 Our beginners class is designed to look after complete beginners that have never danced before. We start with the basic rhythms and simple moves. We ensure everyone feels comfortable and has fun. You can learn at your own pace. Little by little with practice your brain and feet will start to get used to the salsa rhythm. The focus of our classes and the whole night is on having fun and creating friendship. The good news is you are not preparing for Strictly or for a dancing exam. The beauty of Salsa dancing is that it can be fun from day 1 even if you're not quite sure what you're doing! 😊 Everyone was a beginner once, and our Southport Salsa Thursdays community is super-supportive and welcoming.

Do I have to come every week? You do not need to attend every week, you can attend whenever your schedule allows. The classes are designed to stand-alone from week to week but over time will cover different moves so you can progress. You will of course learn and progress more quickly if you can come each week but you will not ‘fall behind’ if you miss some weeks. If you have not been for ages, you will always be warmly welcomed back! 😍

How do I find the venue? We hold our classes and salsa nights at The Southport Coaster, 137 Lord Street, PR8 1PU. We dance in the lovely function room upstairs on the first floor above the pub. As you walk through the front door walk up the staircase to your left (just BEFORE the entrance to the pub) If you need to use the lift then go into the pub and the lift is on the left just before the bar. On-street parking is free after 6pm. Check the street signs, make sure you don’t park in the taxi ranks by mistake.

What time should I arrive? We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early, especially if it's your first time. This gives you a chance to sign in, speak to your teacher, buy a drink, change shoes (if needed) and get comfortable before we start. If you are running late then please still come along. You will always be welcome. Better late than never! 😊

Do I need to book?👍You do not need to book in advance, simply turn up on the night.

What if I feel nervous or shy? It's completely normal to feel somewhat nervous when trying something new. We work hard at Southport Salsa Thursdays to create a warm and welcoming space for everyone. The teachers at Southport Salsa Thursdays and all the fellow dancers are friendly and supportive. Remember, everyone is here to have fun and enjoy the music. Try to relax, be yourself, and you'll have a great time! If you are need any extra support please let Leon know.

Can I bring my own drink? The short answer is no. The venue we use is a pub so as with any pub, bringing your own drinks is absolutely not allowed. The Southport Coaster is one of the most reasonably priced pubs in town so please support the venue and buy your drinks from the bar (downstairs). When you support the venue in this way it also helps to support the salsa night to be able to continue to enjoy using this fabulous venue. We also know that dancing salsa can be hot and thirsty work so the venue very kindly provide free water jugs and glasses on the bar for you to stay hydrated. 👍😊
